There's a diner on Tamiami Trail where the coffee never really stops pouring and the booths know your name. The sign out front says Joe's — and that name carries more history than most people ordering eggs on a Tuesday morning realize.
The Joe's name goes back to Joe DiBernardo, who moved to Naples in 1979 and spent the next two decades building a reputation on the local breakfast-and-lunch scene — the White House Restaurant, Mr. Mom's Diner, TJ's Seafood & BBQ in Bonita Springs. When he later ran a Cheeburger Cheeburger franchise, he insisted on serving breakfast even though it went against chain policy. In 2001, he opened a diner under his own name for the first time. It was successful from day one, built on a simple formula: consistency, and a kitchen and dining room staffed by people who stuck around.
In 2009, his son — also named Joe, and known to the family and staff as Joey — took over ownership and management of the diner. Joey was a distinguished graduate of the New England Culinary Institute who'd moved to Naples in 1998 and first managed food operations at Barron Collier High School before taking the reins at his father's restaurant. He's the one who added the outdoor dining area that regulars still ask for by name. Confined to a wheelchair at 21 after an accident, Joey worked as hard as anyone in that kitchen and spent years promoting disabled sports in local high schools and colleges. Staff and customers remember him as the kind of owner who made everyone — first-timers and regulars alike — feel like they belonged at the counter.
Joey passed away in March 2021, days before his 54th birthday. His father's words at the time still say it best: "This is his place. When I look at that sign, I see him." The family made a promise not to change a thing — to keep the name exactly as it was, exactly as Joey built it.
"We're not going to change a thing. If anything, we'll work hard to keep his name."
Today, new ownership carries that promise forward — same name, same checkerboard-tile diner feel, same all-day breakfast and lunch the neighborhood has counted on for over two decades. The walls still tell the story: awards from USA Today's 10Best and Naples Daily News's Best Breakfast lists, decades of local memorabilia, and a counter that's been full most mornings since 2001. Now there's fresh pizza too, baked next door by our sister kitchen, The Sauce Lady — one more thing to order without ever leaving the block.
Pull up a stool. The coffee's hot, the griddle's going, and the name on the door still means exactly what it always has.
